Employing a compositing layer technique of two or more images together in which a single colour with a small colour range is removed, colour keying and colour-separation

Overlay and used extensively in the film industry for special effects.

Commonly used for weather forecasting reports on Television. Where the weather girl or man appears to be standing in front large map, but is actually standing in a studio surrounded by a blue or green screen backdrop.

Adobe After Effects

To successfully make motion graphics and visual effects, this software will let the animator composite and animate images in 2D or 3D. After Effects uses a Layer method much the same as Photoshop CS5 does. Each individual image or object video clip, or still image has its own track and can then be adjust from timing and layer order as needed by the animator

Compositing

Chroma key shooting for compositing is achieved through digital image manipulation.

With the Combining of visual images from separate sources into single images, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene?

All compositing involves the replacement of selected parts of an image with other another image. In the digital method of compositing, software designates a blue or green screen as the part of an image to be replaced. With every colour pixel identified the digital software replaces the colour with a pixel from another image, lined up to appear as part of the original.

Masked out Mattes are used in Animation and CGI to create special effects were to combine images of two or more are applied into a single, layered into a final image. Your animated character would be the foreground image, with a background image imported of a picture or movie file.

Sharp edges around your foreground subject, will make it them appear separate from the background and will also make it appear as if the charter has been cut out.

To help reduce this our lighting of the foreground character should mimic the lighting as seen in the background image be it a picture or video.

Also the blending the edges of the foreground subject is an effective method to decrease this effect, offered by various software manufactures.

Neil Gaiman / AOP
Neil Gaiman born in England and now living in Minneapolis America, is one of the world’s best known science fiction and fantasy writers.
With collaborations from author like Terry Pratchett with the novel Good Omens, one of his first published novels. Roger Avary with Beowulf and with Dave McKean for MirrorMask, Gaiman
has learnt from the best.
His first solo novelization of the BBC series ‘Neverwhere’ came later in 1996.
The author of several short stories, any number of graphic novels and a growing collection of animated and CGI films including afore mentioned MirrorMask, Beowulf and a Stop-Motion version of Coraline released in February 2009.
Gaiman has creating a large host of work for the modern animator, including a guest appearance on the animated PBS series of Arthur as himself, animal ears and all.
With three of my favourite films written by him and also within my area of practice, all heavily embroiled in digital animation and CGI content. With a well-constructed set of questions placed before him I should secure some valuable insight into character development and motivation.

I would like to ask Mr.Gaiman a few (4) questions about animation to add to a Dissertation piece on "Digital Animation and film",
Thanks. Martin. E mail : artofillusion@me.com 07704516007

1. MirrorMask, Beowulf and Coraline, All great films that have employing a great deal of digital animation and CGI. I am very interested in the mixing of the real world with digital contracted fantasy images. What are your thoughts on this type of mix layered film and what limits would you put on them if any?

2. Of all the books you have written, which would you still like to produce into a film and what type would you like to try next.
Live action, pure animation, stop motion or a mixture, or something new?

3. Title of my Dissertation is "Actions Speak louder than Words" One of the aspect that I am looking at in Digital Animation and film is the movement of the Animated character.
As a writer and Director what directions would you give your animators and actors?

4. Digital Animation is constantly entering into new areas with increasing technology each year, are you looking into anything new at the moment?
What would you like to see next?
Thanks for your time Martin Tierney.
Adding a 3D shadow to a mixture of different images.
this shadow is a cast shadow only duplicate layer of Dan. Distorted to act like a real shadow and bend up the wall .

This was not the best answer when later the model moved position and the distortion becomes too much. Went for a point light shadow less dramatic but much more controllable!
Started today with Adobe After Effects
Dammed sight easier to use than most digital programs. But still needs practice and experience to get all that you can get out off it.
Shadows, 3D, lighting Titlting on XYZ axis, and CG1 effects on both 3D and 2D images.
Animation for adults, Cartoons for kids!
During The Silent Age Of Animation, as well as The Golden Age Of Animation, cartoons were aimed at adults as well as children. From simple history of shooting black and white film moving to live action in Technicolor was a very expensive and complicated, however making colour animation was simpler. As live-action colour films became predominant, it killing off the “X factor” of animation and the market for shorts cartoons eventually died. Warner Bros and Looney Tunes did still produce some of the most memorable shorts, which when later repackaged for television were such a success it changed many of their main characters into pop icons. With the only long-format cartoons been produced by one studio, Disney. With the reluctance of cinemas to show short run cartoons they retreated to our televisions. This naturally forced animations to be targeted at a much younger audience, with moral guidelines enforced by the television stations. This left adult focused animations with nowhere to go or fit! Also with many non-mainstream animation houses making films, which were never, meant for general release. However television shows like South Park and the Simpsons can return not only be profit to these same television companies but also target a much older audience once again. From the outset Eastern animation houses have always favored a more detailed storyline as a posed to the short comedy outline used in American animations like the Simpsons. However from the book by Richard Adams of Tales From Watership Down became Watership Down the animated film? With its strong dark under tones, put paid to the idea that cartoons are just for kids with it strong adult theme of survival death and loss. With the help of the Internet and sites like You Tube expanding their reach to so many different ages and languages animations and cartoons will forever battle over light and dark issues and all we can do is sit and watch!

1. Your style of animation was born out of the little time and lack of money, would you have done anything differently if you did not have those restrictions?

I would probably have been less original and violent and far more mediocre.

2. What are your thoughts of Animations today?

I don't think about animation much since there is so much of it about. It certainly doesn't need my mental imaging to help it exist.

3. What in your mind is the difference between an Animation and a cartoon (not a trick question)?

I assume one moves and the other doesn't. But I'm not certain which.

4. In the last few years the Internet has brought many unique Animation to the attention of the General public, much the same way that Monty Python did with your work, what have you seen recently and what did you like?

Wall-E

Toy Story 3

The Illusionist

5. I am attempting to mix live action with 3D animation, aside from telling me not do it! What other advice would you give me and other animators today?

Mix away! You are living in a lucky time for animators. Animation is popular

and seemingly able to deal with more interesting stories and ideas than live action films... and to have fun in the process. The studios and commercial companies are pumping lots of money into animated films so you probably will be able to get a job that will pay your mortgage and booze bills.

“What’s up Doc” who else but Bugs Bunny, Looney Tunes favorite sarcastic Rabbit?
“Who goes where no man has gone before”..... Mars
500 words on old cartoon history and connection to the audience (because rabbits are expendable).
Ofcoures all does not go to plan as Bugs’ rocket hits Marvins the Martian’s home on Mars. Marvin the Martian was created in 1948 Marvin is over 50 years old now by Chuck Jones and was given the voice of Mel Blanc. This is the first time we meet Marvin, the super intelligent Martian, well maybe not that intelligent, more like miss informed.
He sees Humans as nothing more than insects and not the superior and dominate race, well he hasn’t met Bugs yet. Look out Marvin! The balance of this tale is turned around by our laid back hero Bugs Bunny who on arrival confronts the war like Marvin without the aid of any space suit or breathing equipment. After all there cartoons so no problem and no weapons other than a carrot: This is the same carrot which was used by NASA to bribe Bugs into this mission for Earth in the first place. Looney Tunes Studios aimed more at the crazy satire of the situation rather than the out right humour or cheesiness of the image to capture their audience. Looney by name cartoon by nature. The title is from another famous character created by Lewis Carrol in Alice in Wonderland. “Mad as a MARS Hare” plays on both words and meaning to getour attention. Meanwhile back on Mars, Bugs and Marvin, now wants to disintegrate each other. Could this be an observation or a social comment about the world at the time when this animation was made in 1948 just three years after World War II. Animators comments on the world around them are apparent through out the history of animation in all cartoons, none more than Looney Tunes Studios. MAD AS A MARCH HARE.
Meanwhile back to Bugs and Marvin. Bugs as turned the tables on the little Martian and disarmed him, but not undone by this Marvin decides to turn Bugs into a superior future-self which ofcourse back fires and Bugs is turned into a Neanderthal Bunny. Could this reflect the anxieties about mutation by radiation, featured in many of the sci/fi films of the forties. Finally Bugs engages with audience, and turns to us and say “wait until the rest of my Looney tunes mates see me, they better look-out, when I gets home.

Character Design

This adaptation of the epic poem of legendary hero Beowulf. A 2007 motion capture performance film based on the old poem of the same name.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film was created through a motion capture process The cast includes Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich and Angelina Jolie. Motion capture is a digital term used to describe the process of recording movement and translating the movement onto a digital model. Used in many formats, including filmmaking and computer games Recording the actions of human actors, and using that information to animate digital 3D character. Beowulf does not appear on screen as he was described in the
poem. This is the first of many steps in this latest adaptation. A story so and often retold and so many times to become a world record holder. Dating back in its orginal poem form to the 8th century and describing events in what is now Denmark . Within this poem, no distinction is made between history and myth, although it is now read as though it were history with exagerrated story elements. The poem begins with a gilded palace, after many years of peace and tribesman collecting treasures to pay off their local monster and ends with Beowulf’s death in front of the dragon’s den Beowulf himself was born in about the year 495. The Geats were
Beowulf’s clan a, seafaring tribe coming from the north of ADAPT OR DIE Denmark. He defeats Grendel and his mother to save Hroưgar’s kingdom in 515. He becomes king of the Geats in 520. Fifty years after that, the poem says that Beowulf is killed by the dragon.
The poem gives us an accurate if fantastic view of early German Culture? Or is it more likely an
adaptation by them to create a more glorious past? Adaptation became the strong
hold of this tale as it was retold over the years again and again. Constantly rewritten to
suit the culture of that time. There have been so many authors spanning over six
centuries that the orginal authorship still remains in question. Beowulf has been the subject of
much study and speculation. With over 3000 lines, it has plenty of room for misunderstanding and therefore authors have adapted it or it would have long since died away.
In this more modern digital age filmmakers and Video games manufacturers have taken this
tale to a new story board and once more adapted to suit a new medium and modern culture.
Motion capture can animate characters like Beowulf and Gollum, The Mummy, and King Kong. Adapting hero and villains of the past into new images of the future. Giving audiences an adaptation so far removed from the original story as to be a completely new tale and questioning many of the adaptations . In the last two hundred years alone this tale has been rewritten over twenty times in several languages from 1805 Sharon Turner translated into English. John Conybeare into English and Latin in 1814. Frederik Grundtvig 1820 into Danish. William Morris published the ninth English translation in 1895. In the 20th century, Frederick Klaeber’s Beowulf and The Fight at Finnsburg, became the main adapation used by students for the study of the poem. Seamus Heaney’s version of Beowulf was published in 1999 and includes “Northern Irish diction and turns of phrase.” Today the Beowulf epic has been adapted for a number of films, Beowulf & Grendel 2005, Grendel 2007, Beowulf 2007 and Beowulf, Prince of the Geats 2008, and so the story goes on like tales around the camp fire, passed down from Father to son, adapting all the time.
