Virtual set. From the computer-generated image, a combining image is created from different images into newly formed single image.

Chroma Key and green screen technology that has been around for some time,

Employing a compositing layer technique of two or more images together in which a single colour with a small colour range is removed, colour keying and colour-separation

Overlay and used extensively in the film industry for special effects.

Adobe After Effects

To successfully make motion graphics and visual effects, this software will let the animator composite and animate images in 2D or 3D. After Effects uses a Layer method much the same as Photoshop CS5 does. Each individual image or object video clip, or still image has its own track and can then be adjust from timing and layer order as needed by the animator

Compositing

Chroma key shooting for compositing is achieved through digital image manipulation.

With the Combining of visual images from separate sources into single images, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene?

All compositing involves the replacement of selected parts of an image with other another image. In the digital method of compositing, software designates a blue or green screen as the part of an image to be replaced. With every colour pixel identified the digital software replaces the colour with a pixel from another image, lined up to appear as part of the original.

Masked out Mattes are used in Animation and CGI to create special effects were to combine images of two or more are applied into a single, layered into a final image. Your animated character would be the foreground image, with a background image imported of a picture or movie file.

Sharp edges around your foreground subject, will make it them appear separate from the background and will also make it appear as if the charter has been cut out.

To help reduce this our lighting of the foreground character should mimic the lighting as seen in the background image be it a picture or video.

Also the blending the edges of the foreground subject is an effective method to decrease this effect, offered by various software manufactures.
